Should you eat before class? Ideally yoga is practiced in the early morning on an empty stomach. So if you are going straight from bed to your mat then waiting until after your practice to eat is pretty doable. But for most of us yoga class in an evening endeavour. So you may have had nothing to eat since lunchtime and now it's 7pm and your stomach is grumbling all the way to savasana. So should you eat something to curb the hunger pangs before class? A full blow out meal is probably not a wise choice. Your first downward dog with a very full stomach will be unpleasant to say the least. But if you are so hungry that all you can think about is food or you don't have the energy to get through the entire sequence without feeling lightheaded or seeing visions of pasta when your close your eyes to meditate then definitely have a light snack before class. Have a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, some oatcakes or a juice. And make sure you are well hydrated. Have a good, nourishing but light meal after your practice to replenish your fuel reserves and ensure a good night's sleep. You may find that with consistent regular practice your appetite will start to moderate and you will instinctively eat just enough to sustain you both before and after class.
