Pregnancy is a strange experience. It can be amazing. It can be difficult. A time when you have never felt so connected to your physical body yet so out of control. It is humbling and frustrating in equal measure. With a growing bump, seemingly simple yoga poses can prove completely inaccessible. Energy and enthusiasm can wane and even disappear despite the fact that you know this is the one time in life that you really need to embrace your practice. A basic forward bend can leave you feeling nauseous or light headed. Outwardly everything appears calm and mellow but inwardly you can find yourself irritated and exhausted when you have to compromise.
So what can we do when faced with a limitation in our physical practice? It could be pregnancy, injury, illness, the fact that you are not particularly flexible or particularly strong. The answer is simple - do what you can. It is not a competition. Do whatever feels right and forgot about what it looks like. It is okay to feel pissed off. Your practice might be strong one day and very restorative the next. And remember that the physical poses are only one part of the yoga practice. Embrace all elements - breath deeply, observe, be kind to yourself, meditate, detach from expectation and stay present. Enjoy each step rather than focusing on the outcome. Above all keep practicing!
